STAY WITH CULTIVER

A study in stillness at The Oaks Ranch

Framed by the natural beauty of Mossy Point, where the rugged bushland of the NSW South Coast meets the salt-spray of the ocean, lies The Oaks Ranch. Originally a 1900s dairy farm, the property has been thoughtfully reimagined as a sanctuary of relaxed luxury that honours its storied past.

Four hours south of Sydney’s hum, the landscape begins to exhale. Rugged textures soften into deliberate lines – where the bush meets a Spanish Mission silhouette. The architecture is designed to quiet the noise. Across 300 acres of sun-drenched land, the focus remains on the essential: space, privacy, and restorative rest.

In the quietude of the Ranch, CULTIVER becomes an extension of the elements. Our linen—with its tactile nature and palette – borrows from the surrounding dunes and the soft, morning haze of Mossy Point. It’s an invitation to a slower pace, creating an environment where luxury isn’t just seen, it’s felt.

We spoke with the team about the vision behind the property, what makes it unique, and the experience they create for their guests.

What is the story behind Oaks Ranch, and what makes it special?

The property started life as a dairy farm in the early 1900s, and then in 1978 it became a dude ranch, a cattle ranch adapted into an all-inclusive holiday resort. After acquiring the property, we then undertook a substantial refurbishment in 2020, retaining the original footprint and charm, and focusing on enhancing it in a way that felt respectful. Our goal was to create something that feels like relaxed luxury — understated, comfortable, and deeply connected to its surroundings. What makes it truly special is the scale and the setting. We have 300 acres, inclusive of a nine-hole golf course, just five minutes from the South Coast beaches. Even in the middle of summer, you can still find a beach with no one else on it. That sense of space and privacy is becoming harder and harder to find, and we think that’s what people respond to most. It feels authentic, unspoilt, and genuinely restorative.

How would you describe the feeling you want guests to take with them after a stay?

We want them to feel relaxed and at peace, like the noise has quietened. The space, the wildlife, the proximity to the ocean has a calming effect. At the same time, we hope they feel inspired. Of course, there’s also a sense of indulgence — being well looked after, sleeping deeply, eating well, at ARLO, our on-site restaurant, and enjoying beautiful surroundings without effort.

Are there any particular architectural or design styles you’ve taken cues from in the designing process?

The original architecture had strong Spanish Mission influences, and it was important to us that we honoured that rather than overriding it. At the same time, we drew inspiration from Palm Springs. We carefully designed the landscaping to enhance the style of the buildings while still respecting the native surroundings.

What drew you to Mossy Point when imagining this boutique hotel?

The location primarily, as there is something incredibly special about the South Coast. When it came to visiting the site of The Oaks Ranch, we felt it was rare to find a place that feels so untouched, where you’re surrounded by nature yet only minutes from pristine beaches.

How does CULTIVER linen complement the experience you’ve created for your guests?

CULTIVER complements the experience beautifully because it reflects the same philosophy we have — relaxed, understated luxury. The organic textures and muted tones mirror the natural environment — the soft coastal light, the sand, the surrounding bush — so everything feels cohesive and calm.
